The Governing Board of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) announced today the establishment of the “ WANO Nuclear Excellence Award”. The Governing Board established the award “In honour of Dr. Zack T. Pate and in recognition of his leadership in promoting excellence in the worldwide nuclear industry.” The intent is that individuals at any level in an organisation be eligible for the award.

Up to six awards will be made every two years to individuals who are widely recognised by their peers and colleagues as having made exceptional or extraordinary contributions to excellence in the operation of nuclear power plants, or in the infrastructure that supports the nuclear power enterprise. The first awards will be presented at WANO’s Biennial General Meeting in Berlin, Germany on 13-14 October 2003. Nomination and selection procedures for the award are scheduled for publication in early 2003.
